DROP-IN FACILITYWe offer a friendly welcome to anyone wishing to call in at the hospice, with or without pre-arrangement, to find out how we may be able to give help and support. This might be the patient themselves, or a carer, and could be following diagnosis or can be at any other time. We do not need to have a referral from a doctor or other healthcare professional. |

ABOUT THE HOSPICEWhen The Shakespeare Hospice first opened its doors to patients on the 4th February 1999 it was the culmination of ten years of planning and preparation. The idea of a Hospice first saw light in 1989 when the local Rotary Club identified the need for such a service. The project soon became one for the whole community and in 1990 a public appeal was launched. The search for a suitable site began and although this took a number of years, enthusiasm and support from the town continued and a low-key fundraising profile was maintained. A site was finally found in Shottery, a semi-rural area of Stratford-upon-Avon and an appeal was launched on 23rd April 1997. The appeal was so successful that work began in early 1998 and the building was ready for use by February of the following year. Today, we are an independent local charity providing specialist palliative day care for people living in the Stratford upon Avon district, living with a life-limiting illness. The majority of our patients are living with cancer, but we also help patients with other life-limiting illnesses such as Motor Neurone Disease and AIDS. Our specialist palliative nursing care and support enables patients to continue living at home with their families while receiving active treatment, or for as long as possible when active treatment has ceased. The Shakespeare Hospice does not have an in-patient bedded unit, as there is already sufficient provision of this type of care in Warwickshire and East Worcestershire, but to extend our care, we launched the Hospice at Home team in January 2004 to provide nursing support for those patients who wish to die in their own home. We help patients from Moreton-in-Marsh in the south to Tanworth-in-Arden in the north, an area covering about 120,000 people. Today the hospice is open four days a week, Monday to Thursday, and our long-term aim is to open 7 days a week. We are registered for 15 patients a day and most patients attend for one day a week of their choice, or visit us for a drop-in appointment on Monday or Wednesday. Carers and family members are also welcome on these days. Patients are taken to and from the hospice by volunteer drivers or by ambulance if necessary.  There is no charge for our services to patients. We receive a small proportion of our funding from the NHS, and rely on the generosity of local individuals and companies to meet our annual running costs of approximately £1,300,000 this year.A welcoming smile always awaits here at The Shakespeare Hospice.
