CREATING - A WAY AHEAD
In accordance with our charitable objects the Board of Trustees has appointed Dr Paul Ong as Head of Research and Service Evaluation. Dr Ong has already secured a grant from the Arden Cancer Network to carry out a mapping exercise of palliative day care services in the Arden area. This will establish if there is any duplication of services or where gaps exist in provision of care for people attending day hospices.
As a local charity we owe it to our community to provide services which are cost effective and which meet need in the best way possible. This requires a model, or models of care, which currently do not exist. The only way to build such models is by using qualitative methods to listen to the narratives of those who provide and those who benefit from care. Once working models are established, then they can be applied, adapted, and measured using quantitative measures. We believe that our research is a fundamental and vital step in the development of care, in a changing environment, for those with a life threatening illness. We believe that it will have relevance not only for day care units elsewhere, but also for the development of palliative care for those suffering from illness other than cancer.
