MY PROFILE:
I was a solicitor and ran my own practice for 30 years dealing with probate, wills, conveyancing, powers of attorney and family matters. I ran my practice from home to combine bringing up my two sons and a career, dealing with many Clients over that period at a very stressed time of their life.
Having realised the importance of listening to the Clients and their needs and obviously to give practical advice at these times, I very much enjoyed the professional life. I was elected to represent Sole Practice on the ruling body of the Law Society, the Solicitors' professional body and served on this Council for 11 years. I gave up running my practice several years ago following the death of my husband from a malignant brain tumour when all my life sadly changed. Now I just do Tribunal work and charity legal work.
NECESSITY FOR MAKING A WILL:
It is absolutely essential to make a Will to make sure the people you want to receive your money and property etc actually do. Many people put off the question of making a will as they are not keen to face up to their mortality! But two things are certain in life and that is death and taxes! It is much better to make a Will when in good health rather when actually facing a life threatening illness. Leaving money or property in a Will can also save inheritance tax as there is no tax payable on anything in a Will left to the Charity. When people die without a Will often their property and money go to people they would rather not and charities NEVER benefit when there is no Will. With the value of properties increasing more and more estates are getting caught for inheritance tax. There are exemptions from tax`when the estate is under a certain value or when it all goes to the surviving spouse. It is usually advisable to obtain legal and tax advice when making a Will as there are a number of pitfalls and lots of tax implications that the lay person may not be aware of.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
Since the hospice opened we have received 28 legacies and pledges of several others. These generous gifts have made an enormous contribution to our funding and had a direct impact on the care we can offer. Please consider making a bequest to The Shakespeare Hospice; your legacy will enable us to provide our care to local people in need for years to come.
