COUNSELLING

Dealing with loss and illness raises many emotions and can be very disruptive to our lives and our relationships. It can be difficult to work through the feelings we have for lots of different reasons. Counselling provides an opportunity to talk in confidence to someone who is not directly involved in your situation, someone who will give you total attention and empathy without any preconceptions and without offering advice. Sharing your worries and fears can make you less overwhelmed by them and less alone. It can also help to make you feel more in control even though there will be some things that you cannot change.

The Shakespeare Hospice has a qualified and experienced Counsellor who is available to patients and carers either attending the hospice, or living with a life-limiting illness in the community, and the bereaved. Sessions may be held over several weeks, but sometimes one or two sessions are enough. All counselling is done in total confidence.

A Bereavement Support Group meets every two weeks in the evening at the hospice. At these meetings, those who have been bereaved can share feelings and experiences in a confidential and non-judgmental environment and give each other support. This is not a therapy group, but an opportunity to meet in an informal social context. New friendships are made through mutual support in difficult times.

We are grateful to the Municipal Charities of Stratford upon Avon for their grant towards our Counselling Service.
