The Shakespeare Hospice Virtual Art Competition - Inspired by young artist Emilia Callard

It is always a lovely gesture when someone creates something special for the Hospice, even more so when that person is only 9 years of age! Emilia, who celebrated her 9th birthday during lockdown, decided to paint pictures and knit some animals for patients in the Hospice. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Day Hospice is temporarily closed to all our patients, but Emilia’s mum Laura wanted to help raise funds for the Hospice and asked if the paintings could be used.

Emilia and her amazing paintings became the inspiration behind our new virtual Art Competition and Emilia will be judging her own category with the help of local artist Claire Brierley. Read more about Emilia's story and her inspiration to help the Hospice in our downloadable pack when you register.

We are also delighted to have the support of Stratford Butterfly Farm whose staff will be judging their own category in memory of a colleague and friend, Pat, who was supported by our Hospice at Home service. The Butterfly Farm have also kindly offered to exhibit the winners and runners’ ups artwork which will be on display to the public.

This competition is open to all young artists between the age of 0-16 years with 4 age groups

5 and under, 6-8, 9-11 and 12-16.

We have two categories to choose from (or why not enter both!)

Emilia’s Category: Create a drawing or piece of art inspired by nature.

Stratford Butterfly Farm’s Category: Create a drawing or piece of art inspired by their inhabitants - this could be butterflies, caterpillars or minibeasts.

You can use paints, pastels, pens, pencils or you could experiment with textiles, collages, recycled or eco-friendly materials - anything goes!

Once you have entered online, you will receive our pack with all the information you need including some free downloadable activity sheets.
Just email us a photo or scan of your finished masterpiece together with the entry form in the pack to

Winners and runners up will be selected from each age group in each category and announced on our website and social media platforms. All winners and runners up actual artwork will need to be made available for an exhibition at Stratford Butterfly Farm.

Thank you for entering our competition and making a donation to our wonderful Hospice. All the money raised by you taking part is helping our wonderful nurses to look after our patients, their families and carers... You are amazing!

Good luck to all our budding artists, we can't wait to see your work!
