Summary of role

The Shakespeare Hospice, based in Stratford upon Avon, offers a diverse range of services across South Warwickshire and surrounding areas.  Patients and their families/carers can access one or moer specialised services: day hospice, hospice at home, adult and children's counselling for pre and post bereavement, transitional care for terminally ill 16-24 year olds, and spritual, emotional and complementary therapies.  We pride our offer as one that is all inclusive and embraces not only the patient but their complete support system, family and loved ones.

The Hospice has six charity shops and an active online presence selling a variety of new and donated quality goods.  Profits raised from our shops play a vital role in our income generation activities, helping us to generate the £2 million per year it costs to deliver our services.

We have an opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated team player to join our retail shops team to support with shop management cover and relief support.  As Retail Relief Manager, you will be responsible for the smooth operations of shops and projects you are covering and will work cooperatively with Shop Managers and the Retail Operations Manager to ensure the overall objectives of the retail shops are met.

You will assist the retail team to maximise income for the Hospice.  Focusing on sales, merchandising, stock rotation and excellent customer service, you will be part of a cohesive team to promote the work of The Shakespeare Hospice within the local community.  This is an occasional (Bank) role and duties are to cover the shop manager in their absence. 

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Maximise sales targets of the charity shop through effective merchandising, stock control and display techniques
  • Deliver the highest standard of courtesy and service to customers and those donating goods
  • Work with the volunteers, ensuring compliance with Hospice policy guidelines
  • Ensure that you are aware of policies and procedures, including health & safety, manual handling and fire regulations
  • Assist volunteers and colleagues appropriately to ensure everyone meets Hospice policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that shop premises are clean and tidy and that goods are well presented
  • Accept, record, sort and price donated goods, keeping the work area organised and clean
  • Reconcile and bank takings daily, control petty cash and compile weekly returns, as trained and requested
  • To "stand in" for the shop manager as and when required (i.e. holidays, day off, sick leave etc) and maintain the standards of the shop during this period.  This will include opening and locking of the shop
  • Assist in the promotion of the shops to generate regular donations and active customer base
  • To promote the work of the Hospice as agreed with the line manager
  • To abide by Hospice policies and procedures
  • To attend training as identified by the line manager
  • To undertake any other duties in line with the post.
