Volunteer Vacancies

The Shakespeare Hospice in Stratford upon Avon provides exceptional palliative and supportive care to those patients with life limiting illness, their families and carers who live in South Warwickshire and the North Cotswolds, including through our new services for children and young people.

We are supported by hundreds of volunteers, but are always looking for more. We currently have the following vacancies for volunteers at The Shakespeare Hospice. *Recruitment of new Trustees*

The Shakespeare Hospice, based in Stratford upon Avon, is a pioneering organisation whose principal aims are to ensure that every young person and adult living in our community with a life limiting illness and those who matter to them, will be supported with the care and compassion they need.

The Shakespeare Hospice needs new Trustees who share the same passion to serve our community and who will provide expert advice to our Senior Management Team to ensure that we are able to deliver our services today, tomorrow and for always.

We are looking for new Trustees with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Commercial management
  • Procurement
  • Risk Management
  • Income Generation – including fundraising and new income streams
  • Retail
  • Community links

Our Finance and Audit Committee is responsible for financial governance and information technology as well as having a key role in risk management.  We are seeking a new trustee to join this committee who is from a broad commercial management, procurement or a risk management background to supplement the finance and information technology skills already represented on the committee.

Our Income Strategy Committee is responsible for providing oversight of existing income streams – Fundraising, Trusts and Grants and Retail operations. We are seeking new trustees to join this committee who have experience of these areas and also of developing new income streams and who would be comfortable chairing the Committee. We are particularly keen to recruit someone who has well-developed community links.

Our new Trustees should be able to demonstrate appropriate professional skills and have experience of operating at a board/senior level.  They will need to be strategic thinkers as well as having excellent communication and interpersonal skills. An empathy with Hospice philosophy is essential.

All Trustees are required to attend 6 Board Meetings per annum, plus 2 strategic planning days and the AGM. They are also expected to attend monthly meetings of the committee to which they are aligned, providing advice and support to the Senior Management Team within their specific area of expertise.

*Volunteers for the Young People's Bereavement Support Service*

We are currently recruiting volunteers to help us provide support to children and young people who have been bereaved or who care for someone with a terminal illness.  

This is a rewarding opportunity to work with children, young people and their families who are experiencing a difficult time in their lives.

Being a volunteer will be a serious commitment but will come with a deep satisfaction of building a close professional relationship with a child / family and making a real difference in their lives.

Alongside this we can offer you:

Volunteers for the furniture store, Moreton in Marsh

Hospice Information Distributors

Responsible for handing out marketing and promotional materials throughout our catchment area.

Frequency: once / twice a week in busy periods; once every two weeks

Required skills: friendly, polite, confident to talk with the public, mobile

Collection Tin Distributors

Areas: Henley, Kenilworth, Southam, Chipping Campden, Moreton

Responsible for a number of collection tins in a specific area – replacing the tins and sourcing new businesses able to take tins

Frequency: once a month

Required skills: confident to talk with the public, mobile

Community Events Volunteers

Required to man Hospice stalls at local community events, e.g. fetes, country fairs etc., which the aim of raising funds and communicating Hospice information. Also to help at a variety of Fundraising events with tasks such as marshalling.

Frequency: various, to include some weekends

Required skills: mobile, confident, able to work both in a team and independently

Hospice Events Support

Required to help at a variety of Hospice events.

Frequency: various, to include some weekends

Required skills: mobile, able to work both in a team and independently

Retail Assistants

Location: Avenue Farm Furniture Store, Greenhill Street (Stratford), Henley in Arden, Alcester, Wellesbourne, Kenilworth Furniture Store

Customer service. Handling donated goods. Serving customers and using a cash register. Light cleaning. Cash-up. Key holder

Frequency: vacancies available on all days Monday-Saturday

Required skills: presentable, physically able, good communicator, sociable, able to follow instruction

Coffee Shop Assistants

Location: Coffee Shop (in the Bookshop)

Working in our new small Coffee Shop based in our Bookshop in Stratford. Serving hot and cold drinks and cake. Training will be provided.

Frequency: Wednesday, Thursday afternoon, Friday afternoon, Saturday, Back up for any day

Required skills: presentable, good communicator, able to follow instruction

Van Assistant

Location: Kenilworth Furniture Store

Help staff collect donated items from donors and deliver to customers

Frequency: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday

Required skills: physically able, good communicator, able to follow instruction


Drivers required to transport carers and patients to and from the Hospice and hospital appointments

Frequency: flexible Monday – Thursday

Required skills: mobile. Physically able. Good listener, empathic. Full training will be given

Day Hospice – General Support

Required to work in Day Hospice under the guidance of clinical lead. Help support patients, both practically and emotionally

Frequency: flexible Monday – Thursday

Required skills: mobile. Physically able. Good listener, empathic. Full training will be given

Chaplaincy Volunteers

Required to work in the Day Hospice and community under the guidance of Hospice Chaplain. Offer spiritual support to patients and families

Frequency: flexible Monday – Thursday

Required skills: good listener. Empathic. Full training will be given

Diversional Therapists

Required to work in Day Hospice under the guidance of clinical lead. Help entertain patients. Help the team develop and introduce fresh ideas.

Frequency: flexible Monday – Thursday

Required skills: a creative ability. Good listener. Empathic. Able to work both as a team member and independently.

Complementary Therapists

At the Hospice we operate a multi-discipline complementary therapy team, staffed by experienced volunteer therapists.

Working closely with the clinical team, in 2016 we delivered 1550 treatments to our patients, who really value our work.

Our patients have complex needs and our therapists become experienced in all aspects of palliative care; no two days are every the same.

We are now recruiting further therapists to deal with our expanding service.

If you are a fully qualified and experienced therapist and could regularly spare some time to work with us, I would love to meet you.

The therapies we deliver are, Reflexology, Reiki, Aromatherapy, Bowen Therapy, Butterfly Experience, Rosen Therapy and selective massage.

Counsellors and Bereavement Support Workers

Volunteers required to work with bereaved clients on a one to one basis in the Hospice and in the community. This role is not suitable for those who work full time. Volunteers would be required to attend training and on-going supervision.

Frequency: a weekly commitment of 6-8 hours

Required skills: Qualified counsellors. Non qualified but have some experience of working with people who have experienced loss.

Community Support Volunteers

Required to support our patients within their own home and/or the community. To offer practical, social and emotional support and social interaction

Frequency: adhoc

Required skills: good listener. Empathic. Able to use initiative and work within a team. Mobile and physically able

Reception Administrator

Carry out general administrative duties for Hospice and staff. Work with the receptionist, supporting that role at busy times. Man the second telephone. Help cover reception for holidays and sickness. Training will be given.

Frequency: 8.30am-1pm or 1pm-5.30pm, Monday - Friday

Required skills: calm, organised. Confident. Excellent telephone manner. Computer skills. Able to work in a team and independently.

Kitchen Assistant

Required to assist the Chef in main Hospice Kitchen, with general duties to include food preparation and to help assist cover when Chef on annual leave.

Frequency: 1/2 - 1 day each week, Monday – Thursday

Required skills: mobile. Physically able. Able to follow instruction. Able to attend training

Housekeeper Assistant

General cleaning and various housekeeping duties, to work alongside and support current housekeepers

Frequency: Frequency: 1/2 - 1 day each week, Monday – Thursday

Required skills: mobile. Physically able. Able to follow instruction. Able to attend training


Light gardening duties to help maintain the Hospice gardens. Does not include the lawn, hedges or trees (maintenance contract)

Frequency: flexible

Required skills: mobile. Physically able

Our Family Support Services include Children and Family Support Service, Bereavement Support, Counselling, Chaplaincy and Social Work Service.
